The In-filling of the Holy Ghost

Christ spoke frequently about the coming of the Holy Spirit and commanded his disciples to receive this gift. The infilling of the Holy Spirit is a subsequent experience to salvation.

The pattern in the Scriptures is plain:

PROPHESIED:

(Isa 28:11 KJV) For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.

(Isa 28:12 KJV) To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

(Joel 2:28 KJV) And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

(Joel 2:29 KJV) And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

(Mat 3:11 KJV) I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

PROMISED:

(Acts 2:38 KJV) Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

(Acts 2:39 KJV) For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

(John 7:39 KJV) (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

(John 14:15 KJV) If ye love me, keep my commandments.

(John 14:16 KJV) And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

(John 14:17 KJV) Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

(John 14:26 KJV) But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

(John 15:26 KJV) But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

(John 16:7 KJV) Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

(John 16:13 KJV) Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.

COMMANDED:

(Luke 24:49 KJV) And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

(Acts 1:4 KJV) And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

(Eph 5:18 KJV) And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

SENT AND RECEIVED:

(Acts 2:4 KJV) And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

(Acts 8:17 KJV) Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

(Acts 10:46 KJV) For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.

(Acts 19:6 KJV) And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

YOU MUST BE A CHRISTIAN:

(John 14:17 KJV) Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

THE EVIDENCE – TONGUES:

The Spirit can dwell with people and yet not be in them – see John 14:17.

In the beginning – Acts 2:4.

In Samaria after their conversion – see Acts 8:5-18.

Saul received three days after conversion – see Acts 9:1-18.

Home of Cornelius – eight years after Pentecost – see Acts 10:44-46.

At Ephesus – Twenty years after Pentecost – see Acts 19:1-6.

RECEIVE BY FAITH:

(Mark 11:24 KJV) Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

(Luke 11:13 KJV) If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

The coming of the Holy Spirit from Heaven was God’s sovereign act. The coming of the Holy Spirit into a Believer is dependent upon the Believer’s faith act.
